First Steps is a programme designed for children who are a little too young for Kindergarten and offers an age appropriate and relevant introduction to the Early Years Foundation Stage.
This class enables your child to feel confident and comfortable away from their caregiver. It encourages the children to become more independent, helping them to develop classroom routines, learning to positively interact with others, and to develop their concentration skills.
The curriculum will be age appropriate and based on the Birth to Three Provision within the
Early Years Foundation Stage.
Students enrolling in First Steps will enrol at the same time for the Kindergarten class starting in September..
The teachers are well qualified and experienced kindergarten professionals.
Teachers will work closely with parents/careers to settle the children.

Registration Fee (On Admission only)
Once a place is offered and accepted, a non-refundable and non-transferable Registration Fee of $970 (Half-day session)
- Registration will only be completed after the School has received the Registration Fee.
- The Registration Fee will be credited against the school fees for the child’s first term at the school.
- The Registration Fee is non-refundable and non-transferable if a child subsequently does not take up the confirmed place at the School.
Tuition Deposit (On Admission only)
Once a place is offered and accepted, a fully refundable under conditions and non-transferable Tuition Deposit of $20,000 is due immediately.
- Registration will only be completed after the School has received the Tuition Deposit.
- The Tuition Deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable if a child subsequently does not take up the confirmed place at the School.
Once the child has taken up the place and attends at the School, the Tuition Deposit is fully refundable under conditions.
- $20,000 of the Tuition Deposit will be credited against the school fees for the child’s last term at the School.
- To obtain a refund of $20,000 of the Tuition Deposit, parents are obliged to give “Due Notice of Withdrawal” in writing.
All fees will be subject to final approval by the Education Bureau (EDB).

Payment of Fees
- All fees are stated in Hong Kong Dollars.
- Payments can be settled by crossed cheque. The School does not accept cash.
- Payments by cheque have to be made payable to “Anfield International Kindergarten”. Please state the child’s name and student number on the back of the cheque.
- Parents of a child, whose fees have not been paid within 2 months, will be required to withdraw the student from the school.
- If a child for any reason is unable to attend school at the beginning of a term, the fees are nevertheless due. The School cannot undertake to remit or refund fees, whether in lieu of notice or otherwise, on account of illness, quarantine or any cause whatsoever.
- It is at the School’s sole discretion to consider individual requests for alternative fee paying arrangements.
- If, for reasons beyond the School’s control, the school needs to close for a limited period, the School is not liable to refund fees.
Withdrawal
Before your child has started school:
If notice is given before the agreed date for your child to start school – the Tuition deposit is not refunded or transferred under any circumstances
After your child has started school:
If notice to withdraw is given after your child has started school the following conditions must be met:
- Parents must give at least 2 full calendar months’ advance notice in writing before their last day in school, specifying the pupil’s withdrawal date or 2 months’ tuition fee in lieu of the notice, once given cannot be withdrawn unless with the agreement with the School. For example, if a child withdraws from Anfield on 30th June, notice must be given before 30th April.
- The notice period does not include school holidays: Mid term breaks, Christmas, Chinese New Year, Easter, the summer period of July and August and may not span two academic years.
- Please note that the fees for a full month are charged even if only part of the month is attended, e.g. for a child leaving on April 15th, the fees must be paid until the end of April.
- Notice once given cannot be withdrawn unless the agreement of the School.

Curriculum
The curriculum for our First Steps class is based on the British National Curriculum’s Early Years Foundation Stage. We include the same 7 areas of learning and have adapted the early learning goals accordingly.
Our belief is that children learn by “doing” to become independent, confident learners. We have a child-centred approach to learning in which the moral, physical, creative, social and emotional development of the child is as important as his/her intellectual development.
We aim to provide a learning environment in which children :
- have opportunities to learn through investigation, exploration, and discovery within a disciplined yet caring and stimulating environment.
- are motivated to learn through being actively involved in purposeful activities and play.
- feel confident about tackling new situations and are prepared to think for themselves and act independently.
Communication and Language
Students will be encouraged at all times to become confident communicators, both as individuals and as part of a small group. English is the main language used in our classrooms and children are taught through the modelling of our teachers.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Students will have many opportunities to play alongside other children and skills such as sharing, taking turns and participating in group activities will be encouraged. We will facilitate independent self help skills and decision making skills through practical participation. We will also – after an initial settling period – encourage the gradual withdrawal of the accompanying adult from the classroom for short periods of time.
Physical Development
Through our child-orientated environment, students will be able to develop their large and fine motor skills. They can develop skills such as climbing, throwing, kicking and jumping in the playground. Through carefully selected play materials, their fine motor skills – needed later in life for writing – will be developed in the classroom using pencils, paint brushes, scissors, threading and much more.
Literacy
All students are encouraged to enjoy books as this helps with reading and writing skills at a later stage. Books are freely available and there are daily “story times”.
Mathematics
The foundation knowledge that students have already attained will be developed. Number concepts, an understanding of size and comparisons, matching, pairing and problem solving will be developed through practical situations.
Expressive Arts and Design
Students will have the opportunity to explore the properties of natural elements such as, water, sand and clay. We will encourage creativity through drama sessions and participation in role play situations. Students will develop their imagination and experiment and create through mediums such as paint, collage, sand, junk modelling, playdough and clay.
Understanding the world
We will provide opportunities for students to explore the environment with the use of field trips as an extension of the classroom. Teachers will encourage a natural curiosity of the surrounding environment using circle times for discussion that would include topics such as the current theme, weather, changing seasons and festivals.
